OVERVIEW
School Bond 2013 addresses growth, security, and improvements to existing schools.
Amarillo ISD is proposing a school bond issue for $99.45 million.
School Bond 2013 addresses new classrooms and schools to manage growth and includes improvements to existing schools. It also addresses student safety and security. The election is scheduled for May 11, 2013.
In the 10 years since the district's last bond election, Amarillo ISD's enrollment has grown by 13.5% to 33,332 students. Just since 2008, AISD has added over 3,000 students, enough to fill six average-sized elementary schools. Currently, AISD uses 86 portable buildings (160 classrooms) to address the increasing number of students.
In addition to growth and the need for more classrooms, AISD's existing schools require continued attention to keep them up to current standards and provide functional learning spaces for students. 86 percent of our schools are at least 50 years old. Just as in an older home, older schools require more upkeep such as heating and air-conditioning system replacement.
Beginning in November, a 22-member Facilities Advisory Committee representing all corners of AISD looked at enrollment projections, analyzed the needs of the District and, at the end of January, recommended that the School Board call for a bond election.
On May 11, AISD voters will be asked to vote on School Bond 2013, a proposal that:
- Addresses the needs of hundreds of new students by including classroom additions at 7 schools, 2 new sixth grade campuses for Bowie and Travis middle schools, and a new elementary school in the Caprock cluster;
- Funds renovation projects such as HVAC replacement, a new cafeteria and kitchen at Eastridge Elementary, and synthetic turf for middle school playing fields;
- Provides for video security upgrades and for secure main entrance configurations at 13 elementary schools that don't already have a visitor-controlled entrance.
